Mrs. Pamela Lewis

Ghana School Aid is very sad to announce the death of one of its most lively and valued founder members.  Mrs. Pamela Lewis “just slipped away” on 18th November 2011 after a short illness.

Eric and Auriol Earl have known Pam and family since 1956, in Accra; and Pam came on both Ghana Visits, 1990 and 1995.  She worked closely for many years with all the other founder members of Ghana School Aid.  GSA was founded in 1986, and Pam was its very efficient Hon Sec until she moved to Wales.  It was Pam who started the AGMs, which were not provided for in the Trust Deed.  She kept us on the straight and narrow, always mindful of GSA’s prime objectives.  She will be very much missed by all who knew her.

Tue, 27 Sep 2011 03:20:00 -0700 This website http://www.ghanaschoolaid.org/this-website http://www.ghanaschoolaid.org/this-website

I'm not sure what the AGM item "Website" is intended to cover but here are a couple of observations about the current situation.

1.  The website exists.  It works.  A couple of brave souls have actually posted articles or comments.  It is entirely an organisational issue now whether GSA actually wants to use it.

2.  Unless there is a good reason for something to be kept private, I'd suggest that any news/ discussion etc is posted on the website rather than by email.  That way we have a complete record of discussions and people have only one place to check.  So I'd encourage the 14 email recipients of the AGM to read and indeed post on this site.  By registering, the system automatically sends you an email when there is activity on the site, so you're kept informed and it is easier to manage people's email addresses (it is self-service).

3.  I'd ask all the recipients of grants to post progress reports on the site.  Any time there is construction, for example, ask them to post photos (I'm sure there will be at least one camera phone available) each week/ month.  I'd make continuous reporting a requirement of any grant.

4.  You have the oppotunity to re-think the newsletter.  Instead of a mad annual rush to create a newsletter, why not post articles on the website throughout the year?  Then the newsletter - if you still want it - becomes just a matter of collating the already written articles into a paper version.  If you view the newsletter as a source of income, you could address tis by having an annual subscription drive.

The above are just some ideas.  Anyone who's currently using email could use the website.  It's up to you.

Someone - I'm sorry I can't remember who - asked me for a large Ghana School Aid logo.  I've converted the original small image into vector artwork so I can scale it up to any size.  Let me know what size you'd like or just download the one below (right click in most browsers).

Fri, 27 May 2011 05:34:00 -0700 Should we publish the newsletter online? http://www.ghanaschoolaid.org/newsletter-online http://www.ghanaschoolaid.org/newsletter-online

Printed copies of the latest newsletter are now available.  Would it be useful to have the articles published here on the website?  That way they would be accessible to a wider audience and indexed by Google etc.

Thu, 05 May 2011 15:20:32 -0700 Kings of Kumasi Exhibition, London http://www.ghanaschoolaid.org/kings-of-kumasi-exhibition-london http://www.ghanaschoolaid.org/kings-of-kumasi-exhibition-london Some of you may be interested to attend this exhibition which has just opened at the Jack Bell Gallery in London. Entitled 'Kings of Kumasi: New paintings from the Asante capital' and runs from the 5th May to the 11th June 2011.

The show presents a group exhibition of paintings by three Ghanaian artists living and working in Kumasi, a city renowned for its thriving scene of street painting workshops. The featured artists are Almighty God, Akwesi Addai and, exhibiting in the UK for first time, Isaac Otchere Azey.

Jack Bell Gallery is located near Victoria Station at 276 Vauxhall Bridge Road, London, SW1V 1BB and is well worth a visit. It's focus is to exhibit, represent and champion artists from all over the world, in particular artists from Sub-Saharan Africa. Represented artists employ all mediums, with a tendency towards politically and socially engaged artwork. See also the short review of the recent 'Paa Joe: Taking it with you' exhibition featured in the 2010/11 GSA newsletter.

More information about this current exhibition, as well as past and future shows, is available online at http://www.jackbellgallery.com/exhibitions.html or by telephoning +44 (0)20 7976 6078

Please add a comment to this post and let us know what you thought of the show!

Thu, 28 Apr 2011 05:46:00 -0700 25th Anniversary newsletter out soon! http://www.ghanaschoolaid.org/25th-anniversary-newsletter-out-soon http://www.ghanaschoolaid.org/25th-anniversary-newsletter-out-soon

The 2010/2011 newsletter is off to the printers next week and will be sent out shortly.

This issue marks the 25th anniversary of the founding of Ghana School Aid by four former Education Officers in 1986. The setting up of the charity, its history and development is described in a fascinating account by one of the founders, Eric Cunningham (former longstanding Committee Member), with help from another, Eric Earle (Committee Member and former Chairman).

Also included is an article by Helen Niven who writes about a visit to a school near Tamale which has recently received GSA funding. Alhassan Salifu Baako contributes an article describing his role as our representative in Northern Ghana, and Judith Clucas of Oakfield Primary School Rugby, writes about the highs and lows of raising funds for their link school at Aburaso.

Updates on projects from Jo Hallett, Penny Sewell, Patrick Heinecke and Rita De-Graft are included alongside the book and exhibition reviews, obituaries, accounts and a letter of thanks from Jemima Ohenewa Essien, a pupil at Abonse Presby Basic School, Adukrom-Akuapem.

Tue, 22 Mar 2011 06:49:00 -0700 A new website http://www.ghanaschoolaid.org/test-post-under-pc http://www.ghanaschoolaid.org/test-post-under-pc

This is the new GSA website.  It uses a standard blogging service called Posterous.  This should mean that lots of people can contribute or edit directly without any technical skills - it should be just a matter of emailing the article you want published to a special address.  Please let me know if you're interested in contributing.

This approach also means we could treat the newsletter as a series of individual posts and publish them separately on the website.  They could be published when they are written rather than appear as a clump each quarter.

I'm happy to discuss the possibilities of the technology but the contributions must come from the community.

Mon, 21 Mar 2011 09:40:00 -0700 Gold Coast and Ghana Memories http://www.ghanaschoolaid.org/site-1 http://www.ghanaschoolaid.org/site-1

The GOLD COAST AND GHANA MEMORIES assembled in this book cover a period from as early as 1926 to the early 1980s. They are from people who have worked in the country in a range of occupations across this time, and give accounts of life and work in the Gold Coast and Ghana over an exciting period. The book closes with a short overview of the work of Ghana School Aid including two maps showing the activities of the charity. Admiration and respect for the Ghanaian people are tangible and translate into deep sympathy with the country’s historical and current development.

The book was launched at the Ghana School Aid AGM in Bristol at the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum in June and is distributed for charitable purposes only. Ghana School Aid is happy to receive a donation of £10 plus £2.50 for postage for the book to contribute to the work of the charity.

To order please send us a cheque with a relevant donation made out to "Ghana School Aid" to the Honorary Treasurer Mr S. E. G. Anthony, 8 Campion Terrace, Leamington Spa, CV32 4SX. Click here to download a Gift Aid Form. Alternatively you can also email us at info@ghanaschoolaid.org.
